Major Elaine Arnold here, from the Salvation Army. Twenty years ago, my husband
Eddie and I were stationed at Doggy, and lived in Verdun Terrace, next door to
John & Elizabeth. We spent two happy years there, and still remember many of the
folks, some of whom are very elderly now.
Please give my regards to the Chalks when you see them - they'll be tickled pink
to know I've been in touch.
Good luck with the website (Elizabeth told me about it!)

My great great great grandfather was the innkeeper at the queens head in 1871.
His name was John Lonsdale. I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything
about either my family or the inn. Thanks Anne Bell

Hi your right all we ever hear is people putting our village down, people that
don't even know us. it is a bout time people started to put doggie up in a
positive way for once. Doggie is never as bad as people say it is. for once say
something good about doggie if not don't say anything.

I grew up in Cornforth and left in 1984 to work "down south". I still get back
to the area to visit family and friends and each time I visit Im reminded of the
many happy memories from my childhood days.
The pace of life is naturally much slower in villages and Durham ex-Pit villages
are still picking up the pieces of their coal industry. Unfortunately, Cornforth
is no exception and is still feeling the effects of the pit closure from 1967!
This website seems to give a good insight into the history of an industrial
village at the peak of it's output which has had to adapt to change after the
heart & soul of it's community was taken from it.
I was surprised however, to see recently that the co-op on the high street had
closed and I hope it will re-open again soon. Unfortunately it's just another
indicator of decline which appears to follow the trend.
I read the online newsletters on this site and the Cornforth House project seems
to be pulling in plenty of funding for the village and I hope you can build on
this and attract enough investment to reverse the decline.
I'm proud to have come from Doggie and for all the hard working individuals who
put Cornforth on the map for all the right reasons and I don't suppose I'm
alone.

The authorities should be concerned about the recent wave of bad publicity
surrounding the village because it is bound to affect the desirability of new
properties for sale. If you can't attract enough people to buy the new houses
then it will put off future investors and developers and ultimately the house
prices of those already living in the village. Come on you lot, get your act
together!

I recently paid a visit to the village and had some very nice
pints of real ale in the Square & Compass pub on the village green. A very
friendly pub in a lovely location and I shall certainly return for a few more
pints next time I'm "up North".

I moved away in 1992
but it's good to check back on this site every now and then to see how the
village is getting along. A very informative website which seems to get
bigger every time I come back to it. Well done and keep up the good work!

It's sad to see all
the facilities that have been and gone in the village.
Just look back 25 years and think of all the shops and pubs that have closed
since then.
I hope someone takes over the coop soon because otherwise it will have a knock
on effect to the rest of the shops on the street. Where is all the regeneration
money we were promised years ago?

The first 20 years of
my life were in West Cornforth and I have so many happy memories of carefree
days spent playing and climbing trees down the woods. Also the youth club run by
Tommy Dodds at the Welfare - those old tunes we listened to in the early 70s are
still the best! After a spell at Black and Decker I worked in the new library
for the first 2 years it was open and then moved to the Thames Valley with my
husband. We now live in South Hampshire where I had the most amazing coincidence
at out local library in Fareham which must be about 350 miles south of 'Doggie'.
When in the reference section one day, about 9 months ago, I overheard a man
running a family history session telling everyone that his grandfather was born
in West Cornforth! What a small world - of course I interrupted the session to
reveal that so was my grandfather!! The man was called Chris North and we later
spoke briefly about the coincidence. Hope all is going well up there - we don't
tend to visit as we don't have any relatives living in the village now but after
finding the site I will pop in to read the mesages here and any updates. Hello
to anyone who remembers me - Pat Pinnegar (was Ogden, dad - Jack, mum - Beatie)

COMMENTS: Thanks very much for your concern. The questionnaire was
taken off during a recent revamp of the site. Unfortunately it wasn't
being used for the purpose intended, however if it gave a few people a laugh
then at least it wasn't a COMPLETE waste of time. If you would like
to make any further comments then you are more than welcome to use this section.
